5 Quick Operation Tips for any Magnetic Drill
On-site hole-making is a common fabrication activity, but is not always done correctly. As with any job, the choice of the right tool for the application and the correct practices can make a real difference in how smoothly the operation goes. That’s why it’s important that metal fabricators know more about portable mag drills used for hole-making and basic steps that can be taken to get more productivity out of those power tools.
  1. Prepare your work surface. Make sure you have a clean, flat and smooth work surface that is free of chips. Make sure the bottom of the magnet is also clean. Any foreign matter such as chips under the magnet could rock it and decrease its holding power, resulting in the drill rotating or shutting down. If the surface is heavily rusted or covered with paint, especially epoxy, the magnet may not obtain good holding power and special care must be taken to ensure proper magnet adhesion in these cases.
  2. Use a safety chain. Using a safety chain or strap is critical in the event of loss of power or if the drill safety circuitry shuts down, because it will ensure the drill does not fall on or injure you.
  3. Use coolant. Proper use of coolant is essential to good cutting tool life and drill performance. Try and choose mag drills that come equipped with gravity-feed coolant systems or arbors with internal coolant reservoirs. If a drill is not equipped with an integrated coolant system, a good stick lube placed on the cutting teeth can also do the job.
  4. Use the right cutter for the application. Annular cutters are material-specific, and using the right cutter will result in optimal tool life. Many tool manufacturers supply data on what cutter types to use with specific materials and it should not be ignored.
  5. Steady feed rate. A major cause of broken or prematurely dull annular cutters is a slow feed rate. A firm, aggressive and steady feed pressure throughout the cut, where you can hear the motor work, results in a good hole and long tool life. A good feed rate will result in a healthy chip coming up out of the flute, keeping the cutting teeth free to do their job.

DONʼT GET ʻBURNTʼ BY UNCERTIFIED PUMPS

Zenit Submersible Pumps exceed the new standard.

As one of the leading names in water treatment technologies, our Pumps have been awarded the IECEx – the international certification covering the use of equipment and services in explosive conditions.

So what is a ‘hazardous area’?

You can’t be too careful in hazardous areas – which is any space where flammable liquids, vapours, gases or combustible dusts could occur in high enough quantities to cause a fire or even an explosion. These include:

  • car parks
  • truck stops
  • vehicle workshops
  • bus depots
  • and garages

Could you be using an uncertified pump (and not even know it)?

Uncertified pumps are not only illegal, they’re an accident waiting to happen. So if you’re caught without a certified pump, you could be risking power disconnection, pump removal, pump replacement, and even regulatory action. It’s easy to tell if yours is certified, because the manufacturer or distributor will give you a ‘Certificate of Conformity’ at the point of purchase.

Cut costs without cutting corners.

Our pumps deliver the utmost reliability, uncompromising quality and value for money. In fact, we stock the most extensive range of IECEx approved pumps in Australia and New Zealand.

So keep your standards high and your costs low by calling me on 1300 738 601 or visiting www.zenitpumps.com.au
